  • Thanks much for the shout-out and the link to my blog. So much of what marketers tell us to do is based on racking up meaningless numbers. ‘Garbage metrics” is what one author called them in a Tweet I got yesterday. In the comments somebody told me about an author who bought 1000 Facebook “likes” so she could impress an agent. She did, and she got a contract. With an agent who thinks buying 1000 FB “likes” will sell books. A dubious achievement, I’d say.

Connecting one-on-one with real people is the ideal way to build a readership. And the very best way to do that is in real life in real time. I jump on any chance to do a reading or speak to a local group of writers or readers. So I think you’re exactly right in what you’re saying here. Some exhausting things are worthwhile and others aren’t.
