(In terms of the car analogy – maybe irony is the hood ornament, that gets people to notice the car, and the engine is sincerity?)

You can’t get a piece to work if you aren’t at least a little sincere about it. Irony is a conveyance–like a car–but sincerity is the oil that keeps it lubed up.
