  • Not just a good relationship with an editor but an editor who will be tough about the ms–calling me out on weak poems, lazy closures, etc. Someone, or a group of people, who are willing to put the time in because they’re as ambitious for the book as I am.

A good press web presence and network is also key. I know poetry presses have limited resources but a publisher should give SOME publicity help to a willing, hardworking author, even if it’s just facilitating a reading or two. All of the tiny, strapped poetry presses I’ve worked with have done at least that and I’ve really appreciated it.

And beyond the cover: good design generally, fonts etc.
